khalifa university hosts strategic meeting on uae japan research and development Khalifa University hosts strategic meeting on UAE Japan Research and DevelopmentAbu Dhabi, UAE: Khalifa University has hosted a meeting of the Steering Committee of the UAE-Japan Strategic Research and Development and Higher Education Partnership at its Abu Dhabi campus.

The meeting included Khalifa University Board of Trustees member, Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, Adjunct Professor, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies at the University of Tokyo, who chaired the meeting. The meeting was also attended by Khalifa University President, Dr. Tod Laursen.

The meeting began with a review of the activities conducted by the partnership in 2014, including student exchanges and research collaborations into solar cars, solar hydrogen renewable energy systems and future collaboration areas such as the Mohamed bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge, MBZIRC, Medical Sciences, Nuclear Energy, Robotics, the Space Sciences and fish aquaculture.

The meeting was followed by a workshop presented by Japanese academics that looked at potential collaborations, such as, “Possible Aquaculture and Stock Enhancement in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman” with Kinki University?s Dr. Yoshifumi Sawada, “Solar to Hydrogen Energy Storage and its Application,” by Dr. Katsushi Fujii, Project Professor, RCAST, The University of Tokyo, and “UAE-Japan Collaboration in the Umm Al Nar Power and Desalination Project” by Mr. Toshiro Kudama, Corporate Executive Officer, Head of International, Operations, Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc.

“Close collaboration between the UAE and Japan is important to the advancement of technology and development of environmentally friendly, renewable and sustainable energy sources,” said Dr. Mohammed Al Mualla.

He added, “Japan has a great deal of experience in these fields, and the ability to share this knowledge with our academics and students in the UAE, is vital to the development of the UAE?s own future energy infrastructure. It?s also an opportunity to discuss important developments and upcoming challenges like MBZIRC. Certainly, teams from Japan are expected to compete in this challenge, so it?s great to go over it with the steering committee.”
