Young children are naturally curious, and the earlier they can have hands-on learning experiences with STEM, the better you can set them up for success later on in school and in life. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math, and it has become a big focus in education because of the anticipated high demand for a STEM-educated workforce
In response to this urgent need, Sylvan Learning, America’s largest and most trusted name in supplemental education has launched SylvanEDGE. SylvanEDGE offers fun and affordable STEM programs for elementary-age children, including Robotics, Coding and Math Edge. Available after school, on weekends and through summer camps, these programs introduce kids to STEM through hands-on activities and collaborative exercises.
On Saturday June 6th, SylvanEDGE was launched in style with a fun-filled morning of free presentations and demo classes. The event was called Find Your Edge. Similar events have been held by Sylvan Learning across the United States and Canada since April 25. Over 30 families attended Find Your Edge and dozens of students participated in the free robotics classes and coding demos.
Guest presenters Christine Nasserghodsi and Kevin Simpson from KDSL led to discussions for parents. Nasserghodsi, a globally recognized STEM expert and education contributor for the Huffington Post, discussed her involvement in STEM both as a parent and as an educator. Simpson, Managing Director and Founder of KDSL, provided practical advice for parents who struggle to assist their children with math.
“We pride ourselves on having strong relationships with local educators and a robust presence here in the United Arab Emirates and continue to be heavily committed to increasing STEM proficiency among children in our local community,” said Jeffrey Smith, Chief Operations Officer of Sylvan Learning in the GCC Region. “We want to provide parents with the opportunity to start STEM education at an early age in order to better prepare their children for the future job market.”
For many parents, seeking out STEM-based learning for young children can feel a bit out of their comfort zone. STEM wasn’t something they had in elementary school, and it may sound expensive or dull. Quite the opposite, though, there are fun and affordable ways to get children involved in STEM learning in our community.
For example, Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of personal learning for children, offers fun and affordable STEM programs for elementary-age children, including Robotics, Coding and Math Edge. Available after school, on weekends and through summer camps, these programs introduce kids to STEM through hands-on activities and collaborative exercises.
“By introducing your child to STEM-based learning early, such as through extracurricular activities and in-school opportunities during elementary school, you can inspire your child to develop critical skills and get on the right path to high-demand careers—all while building confidence and having fun”, said Dr.Semhar Gebre. Dr. Gebre is the Center Director for Sylvan Learning in Al Barsha, Dubai.
